Helen English
Division Committee Chair
Helen English is a music academic whose main focus is creative ageing. In her recent ARC fellowship, she explored how transformation through engagement with music is experienced by older adults and what within music-making enables such experiences. She leads a creative-ageing research team at the University of Newcastle, supported by the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) as part of the Healthy Minds research program and her team recently completed a creative ageing intervention funded by Dementia Australia. Her overarching passion is to widen older adults’ participation in creativity. In 2024-2025 she is collaborating with Maitland Regional Art Gallery on research into the benefits of their art and dementia program, Conversations. She is also a member of a medical research group exploring digital creative interventions as a collaboration between the UK and Australia.
